IKD customer Catherine was born and raised in Bermuda. She loves everything about the island: the bright colors, the ocean views, and the warm, giving people. The galley kitchen in her new condo however was the opposite: small, dark, and cramped. Could IKEA brighten it up?
The kitchen in her 950 sq ft apartment had last been done 20 or 30 years ago.
But there’s a lovely view, and Catherine wanted to take advantage of it with her new IKEA kitchen design.
Catherine made significant layout changes so she could extend her kitchen under the stairwell. She took out a closet and the doorway, and swapped the stove and refrigerator locations.
Her new IKEA kitchen has much more room for storage and cooking. And it takes full advantage of the sunny window.
How to Get an IKEA Kitchen in Bermuda
Catherine was interested in using IKEA for her galley kitchen for a few reasons. There’s no IKEA showroom on the island, but an import company could bring it to her and it would still be affordable. She plans to rent the space at some point, and wanted to choose furnishings that she wouldn’t have to lose sleep worrying about renters damaging.
But she also loves the look of IKEA, specifically the VEDDINGE door fronts for the kitchen. Catherine thought the smooth matte finish along with some glass front doors would help reflect the light without being too glaring.
She also knew that when it came to the design, she’d be on her own, because IKEA kitchen design help is not readily available in Bermuda. She began searching online for help with IKEA kitchen design and she found IKD. Now her vision for an IKEA kitchen in Bermuda could finally come to life.
The Top 3 Design Challenges for this IKEA Kitchen
Catherine’s wishes for her kitchen were pretty simple.
- A more modern look. Remember how old-fashioned looking the kitchen was? ‘Nuff said.
- More space. The old kitchen desperately needed more counterspace and more structured storage. Taking out the door and the closet provided the opportunity for both.
- Better workflow for the cook. There’s a work triangle in the old kitchen, but it’s so tight it might as well not be there. Also, the refrigerator jutted out and into the work triangle which means always having to dance around it.
An IKEA Kitchen Design that Maximizes the Space
The combination of white cabinet doors polished concrete floor, and architectural changes have brightened and modernized this kitchen.
Structured storage is in abundance. The wine rack next to the kitchen sink uses up some left over space in a useful way. An undersink trash bin pullout conceals the bin while keeping it nearby for the cook. And a pullout pantry near the entryway has plenty of room for food and cooking ingredients.
The washing machine and dryer have been replaced by a dishwasher and more counterspace. The refrigerator and oven have switched places to improve the workflow and increase counterspace.
Getting a countertop the traditional way – measurements, template, fabrication, installation – was impractical for an island home. But the IKEA HAMMARP countertop in birch was a great prefabricated solution.
The Benefits of Working with IKD for an IKEA Kitchen Design
“Hiring IKD to do my kitchen design was the best decision I made in the whole renovation process,” Catherine said when I spoke with her.
Her kitchen installers loved the extra items list and the kitchen design file that IKD sent. When Catherine, her fiancé, and the contractors began putting things together, they used the list and the plan to match up all the cabinet boxes, pieces and parts before assembly.
Catherine was so happy with IKD that she’s since hired us to design the upstairs closets using the IKEA PAX wardrobe system.
“You need to have a plan and a design before you start a home renovation project like this,” said Catherine. “IKD has done a great job on both.”
