An experienced designer would never place a full-height IKEA cabinet above the sink; though it’s a typical mistake for the novice. More reason still to work with a professional!
Washing dishes is tedious, so why make it worse by making it uncomfortable?
Storage fanatics want to utilize every last inch of available storage space – but this is shortsighted because years of discomfort is much worse than losing only 2 cubic feet of storage space. A full-height IKEA cabinet above the sink must have an open space that’s at least 12”high and 30”wide. Here’s why:
- It’s awful to stand or work over a sink with a cabinet just inches away from your face. Entirely too crowded.
- Sooner or later your noggin will bang up against the cabinet. Who wants to injure themselves while rinsing plates?
Instead use a cabinet that is only 15” high, such as a 30”x 15”. Using different height wall cabinets also breaks the lines and the monotony in any row of wall cabinets (see below):
