Give your IKEA mudroom design a classic look with these white shaker door designs.
Our customers all want one thing: custom home designs without custom prices. That’s why IKD designers are always looking for innovative ways to make mass-produced IKEA home goods into something unique. In this article, we demonstrate three ways to shake things up in your IKEA mudroom design using IKEA’s white shaker-style doors.
There are three tricks to a great mudroom design:
- Make it functional.
- Maximize space.
- Use timeless materials.
Each of the following designs uses the same door and drawer fronts – IKEA AXSTAD matt white – but maintains a unique style cohesive with the rest of the space.
IKEA Mudroom Design 1: Building Out
To fit a mudroom in your home, all you need is a wall. If you’re willing to sacrifice some décor and about 15’ of floor space, the payoff will be a more organized home. For example, the Fox Family’s front door opened into the living room, and they desperately needed a solution for the shoes and backpacks that were normally left on the floor or couch.
“Felicia and I have always liked the look of white shaker cabinets. Shaker has been around forever, since the 1800s, I think, and it’s easy to style around even if home trends change. Felicia isn’t convinced the white cabinets will stay white, but I pointed out that IKEA furniture is easy to wipe down.
When she tripped over our daughter’s duffel bag for about the hundredth time, she agreed to let me email IKD and see if they could design something for us using the wall by the front door. I’m honestly amazed at how something so simple has improved our quality of life.” – Ivy, IKD customer

Why Design with IKD?
IKD designer Florence used SEKTION cabinets for the closed storage options. The cabinet doors and MAXIMERA drawer fronts are all AXSTAD matt white, also known as IKEA’s shaker-style line. To navigate the sloped ceiling while still providing useful space, Florence placed Semihandmade floating shelves in the corner by the window.
The wood grain of the shelves matches the KARLBY butcher block countertop used in the IKEA storage bench seat design. The wood also serves to break up the white and keep the design from becoming too monochromatic, as do the bronze NYDALA knobs that Ivy and Felicia chose. The beadboard backing is actually paneling that the couple found at a home improvement store.
IKEA Mudroom Design 2: The Mud Nook
This couple recently added an attached garage to their home. They were excited to be able to park and walk straight inside, avoiding cold temperatures and bad weather, but the mudroom was an afterthought.
“We had a hall tree by the front door, but suddenly that wasn’t our most-used door anymore. We wanted to keep the hall tree there for company, but we still needed something for when my husband and I came home. We didn’t need anything too big and fancy and only had a small recess by the new door to work with. I told IKD we needed a place to store outerwear, boots, and shoes and then fill in whatever was left with other storage. I’d find a way to fill it!
It was important that the cabinets match the white trim we had around the baseboard and windows. I knew SEKTION was the way to go, and when IKD included the AXSTAD doors in the first version of the design, I knew they were the right choice.” – Jasmine, IKD customer
In a space just 80” W x 28” D, IKD designer Merari provided this couple with all the vertical storage they needed from their IKEA mudroom design and then some. By carefully designing fillers to blend with the surrounding window trim and baseboards, Merari made the tall cabinets look like they’d been built with the house. The AXSTAD matt white doors continue the aesthetic, while NYDALA handles in black match the existing hardware on the nearby door.
Beneath the tall cabinet is a woodgrain ledge used to take off and put on shoes and MAXIMERA drawers for shoe storage. This effect was achieved by setting tall SEKTION cabinets on top of a VRENA bamboo IKEA countertop. It’s a great way to make the most of this little nook in Jasmine’s home.
IKEA Mudroom Design 3: Having it All
This family, which consisted of two parents and two adult children, was lucky enough to have a spacious mudroom from the start. However, the original was dark and disorganized – more of a junk room. The homeowners decided to transform the space into something brighter and more welcoming.
“I always shut the door on the mudroom and prayed no guests would enter through the back, even though we as a family use it more than the front. Renovating it was never a priority, but now that the kids are grown, one of our boys is in college and the other just got his first real job, I can spend more time and maybe a little money making the house into something I really like.
They, the boys, have plans to move out in the next few years, so maybe I just need something to keep me busy. All I know is the mudroom design IKD came up with is so much brighter and nicer than what we had before. There is room to organize the whole family, and when it goes back to being just the two of us, I plan to store some of our holiday decorations and wrapping paper there to save me the trip to the attic.
Maybe one day it will hold toys for when the grandkids come to visit.” – Patty, IKD customer
Patty had excellent design intuition and immediately realized that using AXSTAD matt white doors and drawers would allow her to change the look whenever she wanted – just by switching out hardware. You’ve probably noticed from the last two designs that the door handles and drawer pulls our customers chose had a huge impact on the impression their mudroom cabinets made.
In Patty’s case, she mixed it up by giving the doors and drawers two different handles, both from the ENERYDA line of cabinet hardware.
IKD designer Daniel had plenty of space to work with in this design and made the most of it by incorporating a window seat as well as a custom IKEA storage bench seat. Patty had little interest in woodgrain materials except to differentiate the window seat from the rest of the space, so the seating and countertop seen here were supplied by a third party. Daniel designed the unique casing beneath the window seat with horizontal VEDHAMN panels. The storage is all IKEA cabinets and MAXIMERA drawers, with the corner open shelving made using hacked SEKTION panels.
White shaker-style doors will never go out of style in your IKEA mudroom design.
IKD’s professional designers create one-of-a-kind spaces using IKEA products. Because we focus on the customer rather than sales, we can achieve amazing design goals – like creating three unique mudrooms using the same AXSTAD matt white doors.
