In the era of remote work, a functional, aesthetically pleasing home office is no longer an option. It’s a necessity. If you’re looking to design the ideal office for your unique space and lifestyle, the design pros at IKD have you covered.
They did just that for Meghan, a Chicago mom of three, who transformed what was essentially a storage dumping ground into a stunning office library—complete with 45 degree angled walls and floor-to-ceiling shelves for her books and records.
It was exactly what she wanted and needed. Best of all, it didn’t break the bank.
Yes, IKEA Can be Designed Highly Customized Home Offices
After receiving a glowing recommendation from her friend who used IKEA for her kitchen reno and reading countless positive IKD reviews on HOUZZ, Meghan decided to jump on board and hire its design pros.
She ignored those who told her IKEA couldn’t meet her extensive customization requirements and eventually, proved them wrong. Meghan’s library office turned out to be everything she imagined and more.
Now let’s take a closer look at how everything came together:

Why Did Meghan Hire a Team of Office Design Experts?
Meghan was well aware that her vision for a sophisticated office was not an IKEA DIY project. That’s why she teamed up with IKD designer Javier to help her out. She is so thankful Javier provided her with three easy-to-understand diagrams, including a top view, floor plan, and panel. All three sketches gave her a realistic glimpse into the finished product.
In addition to hiring Javier, Meghan hired a contractor to actually implement the design.
What Hurdles Did She Overcome During Her Office Reno?
Just like any home renovation, Meghan’s office vision came with a few challenges, including:
The Layout
This project included a 45-degree angled wall that led to some serious issues with door placement, especially with the two doors opening inward. Due to this atypical configuration, a bit of thoughtful planning and creativity was essential. The goal was to ensure the office looked and felt balanced instead of cramped. Spoiler alert: It did.
The Desk
Meghan was particular about the desk she wanted in her home office. Instead of an IKEA desk, she hoped to continue using a desk she already owned and loved. She asked to place it beneath the window so she could take in the natural light while working. This meant we couldn’t start from scratch. We designed the entire office to seamlessly fit around the desk.

The Window Bench
The window bench was originally intended for seating. However, Meghan had other plans for it. She wanted to style it with potted plants, bringing a focal point to the room and making most out of the natural light. We ensured the window bench gave her the unique functionality she desired.
The Ceilings and Custom Cabinetry
With 8-foot ceilings, making the most out of the vertical space was key. We needed to extend the shelving all the way to the ceiling and pair it with molding to create a seamless, built-in look.
As far as cabinets are concerned, we customized them in two depths: lower Sektion cabinets for larger items and those Meghan doesn’t use often as well as shallower upper ones that enhance functionality and add a touch of architectural elegance.

From Drop Zone to Sophisticated Office Concept
When compared to Meghan’s original office, her current space is pretty mind-blowing. Meghan’s actually shocked at how well the transformation turned out and so grateful her friend encouraged her to jump on the IKEA design bandwagon.

Her new office combines her love for books, records and greenery into a room she’s proud to call her own. The icing on the cake? She didn’t have to give up her favorite desk or spend an arm and a leg.
Meghan’s story makes it clear that even the most outdated and cramped clutter magnet can be transformed into a beautiful, functional office that improves mood and enhances productivity. As long as you have a vision and the right design pros by your side, you’ll be good to go.
