Getting budget-friendly results from your IKEA closet design

Designing an IKEA closet with SEKTION cabinets is possible.

How do we know?

We’ve done it!

Now you may be thinking “Isn’t SEKTION cabinetry only used for kitchens?”

Nope.

We design other rooms along with IKEA kitchens and are well versed in all things IKEA.

So, for instance, when we were recently tasked with creating IKEA closets for several IKEA customers who had tight budget constraints, it resulted in very creative – and cost- effective master closet solutions.

We can guide IKEA customers that are currently looking to design their closet but want an alternative away from the IKEA PAX wardrobe system.

So if you have an example of closet designs from HOUZZ or just some closet design inspiration, bring them to us.

Those IKEA closet designs could be achieved in a more design and budget friendly way.

That’s why we’d like to share a few examples of the recent IKEA closets we’ve designed using design hacks with IKEA SEKTION cabinets.

Let’s see what some of the possibilities are with IKEA closets!

Choosing the right system for you to organize your IKEA closet

Making your IKEA closet work means knowing your budget, space and overall needs.

Depending on your budget, there are several options available.

Those looking for a budget-friendly option might choose the IKEA ALGOT racks that are great for storing  shoes, hats, purses or shirts.

For more liberal budgets, you can select the IKEA PAX wardrobe frame, like our customer Peter from Memphis, TN.

“I have a large walk-in closet in my bedroom and the IKEA PAX was a great solution for storing my suits and dress shoes for work (and my tie collection) and my golf shirts and shoes too. It really takes the stress out of getting ready everyday and put the finishing touches on my master bedroom project,” he explains.

Similarly, the IKEA ELVARLI shelf unit was a perfect fit for our customer Amy from Fort Wayne, IN, who needed an entire closet devoted to her shoes.

“My husband always joked about my shoe collection needing an entire wing of our house. So when we remodeled our home last year the ELVARLI shelf unit was a fun, yet practical way to actually store all my shoes. We love it!”

So, it’s highly advisable to know your daily routine – like Peter did – to effectively maximize your closet potential and your time. Likewise, exploring the available IKEA shelving options that suit you will allow you to easily store frequently used items and be creative too!

IKEA Closet Systems

Let’s take a closer look at the differences between the IKEA PAX, IKEA ELVARLI and IKEA ALGOT systems and what they can do for you.

There are many organization solutions available with the IKEA PAX line.

For instance, the PAX wardrobe system in White provides pull-outs for pants, space to hang long garments and cubbies for sweaters and shoes.

The PAX wardrobe 59”(W)x22-7/8”(D)x79-1/4″(H) in White is another option. It offers drawers for smaller items, including a nook for purses and a valet hangar on the outside. There are also separate dividers for clothes so you can have his-and-hers dedicated areas.

Very clever!

(You can also use interior organizers from the IKEA KOMPLEMENT series, but note that interior accessories are sold separately.)

One of the big distinctions between the IKEA PAX and the IKEA ELVARLI is that PAX is semi-closed while the ELVARLI is made up of an open rack shelving system.

This allows for a more modular and flexible look and feel, including lower pullouts and ample space for hanging items.

The IKEA ALGOT is similar to ELVARLI in looks, and is more cost effective, but there are no drawers here.

That is because it is a floating shelf system, so feel free to use this item in your closet or other rooms as well.

Stand Alone or Built-In Closets

Of course, there are some useful IKEA closet hacks as well, using the SEKTION cabinet system.

For closet storage, try combining SEKTION with White IKEA MAXIMERA low drawers for a stylish and effective way to store your foldable clothing items.

For a more vertical solution, the SEKTION high cabinet with pull-out organizers provides all-in-one options to store shoes on the bottom and accessories above with room for hangers and space for folded sweaters.

Tall Cabinet for Closet

And if you like to display your purse collection for example, or simply want to easily see your items, consider pairing SEKTION with glass sides, like the IKEA BESTA storage combination.

Built-In IKEA Closet With SEKTION Cabinets

Cohesiveness was the key for this recent built-in closet for IKD customers Jason and Leah from Fort Lauderdale, FL.

“We had the nook and needed additional storage for linens,” Jason says.

So they decided to combine IKEA SEKTION cabinetry with IKEA’s AXSTAD Matte White fronts, which not only established vertical storage, but also matched their recently renovated IKEA kitchen (designed by IKD of course!).

Leah explains: “This IKEA closet is perfect to store my arts and crafts materials, seasonal clothing and more. We love it!”

SEKTION closet

So how did we design it, considering that Jason and Leah had budget constraints (with a budget under $4,000) and space constraints?

Since this was a small, built-in closet located in a hallway, we used a combination of tall SEKTION cabinets with IKEA MAXIMERA rollout drawers to easily access the interior.

“I love that the internal drawers can be adjusted in height and combined by size to better fit our needs, especially when storing bulky winter clothes,” Leah says.

For the middle section our team recommended tall cabinets with external drawers, and
for the upper section chose SEKTION high cabinetry with shelving (that can also be adjusted in height) instead of internal rollout drawers.

This provided the functionality of concealed storage with the flexibility of storing their linens and other necessities close by.

IKEA Master Closet Full of Storage

For IKD customers Frank and Martha, from Vail, CO, having a space that streamlined their busy morning routine was crucial.

So they requested a walk-in closet that offered plenty of space while staying within a strict budget of $5,000.

We did better than that and completed the work for a total cost of $3,315.

Specifically, they wanted drawer space incorporated with IKEA SEKTION cabinetry and IKEA AXSTAD Matte White Drawer fronts.

To complement this choice, we used the MAXIMERA add-on side for drawers and IKEA MAXIMERA dividers.

“The dividers are a nice touch and really keep things organized,” says Martha.

Lastly, they opted to use pullout drawers, which give them easy access to their shoes, plus the IKEA UTRUSTA shelves provide storage for miscellaneous items as well.

“This closet makes our mornings, and our lives, so much easier now!” she concludes.

A Galley IKEA Closet Nook

Taking a small space and making it appear larger – without breaking the bank – was the goal for this galley-style IKEA closet nook for IKD customers Samantha and Richard from Chicago, IL.

“Our space is small so we didn’t want to close up the space to build a walk-in closet. We wanted the space to feel wide and open – but without displaying everything we own, and our mess,” Richard says. “But what we really wanted was the versatility of storage from IKEA cabinetry.”

So we recommended they use a combination of small, medium and large drawers in the base cabinets.

And since this was a small nook by a window in a master bedroom, we used a combination of IKEA SEKTION base and tall cabinets, paired with IKEA BODBYN Gray fronts.

This maximized storage without cluttering the layout.

Plus, we realized that the galley layout was perfect to create a “his” and “hers” closet.

Even though Samantha and Richard decided they wanted both sides to look exactly the same, we did embellish the area with a tall hanging space for long clothes on Samantha’s side.

Additionally, the open cabinets of each side give enough hanging space for suits and jackets, while the space next to the doors feature pullout drawers for shoes and shelves for folded clothes.

IKEA Closet Design

As you can see, these closet designs all revolve around SEKTION cabinets, with resounding success.

So it doesn’t matter if your space – or your budget – is limited.

An IKEA closet design idea in the right design hands will save you time and money in style.
