… And How to Get the Looks at IKEA
Here at IKD, we are always amazed at the original ideas that come to us from our customers, and we are always scouring our design sources for inspiration. We’ve rounded up some the top trends of the moment for you to peruse and hopefully be inspired to embark on your own home renovation project with IKEA and IKD.
1. Paint it Black

According to the ultimate authority on interiors, Arch Digest, black kitchens are popping up all over the chicest Instagram feeds. The polar opposite of the traditional white kitchen, incorporating black cabinetry into your kitchen design doesn’t have to translate into a cold or minimalist look especially if you balance black cabinet doors with lighter and brighter trims and finishes. Thinking about giving this trend a test drive?
We love the Shaker Door in Black SuperMatte from Semihandmade. These custom door fronts for the IKEA Sektion Kitchen System bring a homey, cozy element into kitchen spaces but they don’t make this kitchen any less inviting.

2. Maximalism Everywhere

Think you can’t bring your love of bold, bright color and patterns into the kitchen? Think again and be inspired by these maximalist kitchens taking their cue from one of the biggest trends of 2021: more is always more. There are easy ways to get the look by bringing in simple touches and textures such as this handmade, Moroccan-inspired rug from IKEA or create interest on the walls with botanical prints. If you want to take it a step (or steps) further, you can always custom-paint Semihandmade’s cabinet doors in a hue commensurate with the trend such as Farrow & Ball’s Rangwali or Benjamin Moore’s Startling Orange.
3. The Grass is Always Greener

This fresh design trend first started cropping up in 2020 and it’s still going strong. No longer limited to trim and accents, green can be as versatile as standard neutrals and looks especially chic in living areas. If you are looking to refresh a media center or create the look of built-ins without the custom price tag, look no further than Semihandmade’s cabinet fronts for the IKEA Besta Storage System. The “Agave” color variant is a light, warm green that can be ordered for delivery within a few weeks. And remember, IKD’s services aren’t limited to the kitchen – we offer design services for every room in your home. All designs include color renderings, floor plans and elevations, materials and our Extra Parts List. Your design will be fully loaded in IKEA’s Home Planner for both IKEA and custom door suppliers.
4. Multi-tasking Spaces and Places

Chances are, unless you work freelance, you never thought much about your home office before March 2020, if you even had one at all. Now, home office ideas and multi-function spaces are as ubiquitous as streaming platforms and at-home workouts. It’s not easy to find an “extra” room in your home, so multi-tasking has taken on a whole new meaning for that unused corner in your living or dining room. IKD can help you tailor a home workspace (or homework space), whether you are converting an unused guest room or carving out a small desk and storage in a highly-trafficked area. IKEA’s flexible cabinetry systems are meant to fit almost anywhere, so you can get down to business.
5. Cottagecore

The Cottagecore trend that launched thousands of sourdough bread memes during the pandemic is here to stay, and it’s ultimately about building a more cozy, sustainable lifestyle. From an interior aesthetic standpoint, think lots of plants, rustic-looking furnishings and layered textures. To get more of the vibe, check out this IKEA video of a sweet one-room cottage designed entirely with IKEA storage and finds. While we like the idea behind this trend, Cottagecore can easily become “cluttercore” if you don’t have smart storage solutions throughout your home. So, bring us your toughest storage problems for ANY room in your home and we can help you find a design that fits your needs and keeps you organized. Now that’s a trend we can get behind.
