A guide to budget-friendly and distinctive IKEA mudroom designs

Making an IKEA mudroom work means making it work for you. And as IKEA design experts, we know that for some a mudroom design is considered simply a space to drop your shoes or coat.

But it is so much more than that.

In fact, it can be a hardworking multi-purpose space that provides plenty of storage; double as a laundry center; or–if near the entry of the home – could serve as the foyer of your home.

And don’t let the term “mudroom design” fool you. An IKEA mudroom designed with IKEA SEKTION cabinetry framework can be a seamless extension of the home’s design sensibility.

Therefore, IKEA customers looking for mudroom design examples would surely like examples of efficient mudroom designs with different layouts, styles and sizes under $3,000. So yes, IKEA mudrooms can be sensible from both a lifestyle standpoint and a budget standpoint.

For instance, one option is a small, traditional entryway mudroom featuring IKEA AXSTAD doors; or an L-shaped mudroom that packs plenty of storage; or a modern mudroom that mixes IKEA ASKERSUND doors with IKEA PAX functionalities.

The design possibilities of IKEA mudrooms are pretty limitless – and cost effective.

So, if you’ve been recently searching design Websites such as HOUZZ for examples of mudrooms, we’d like to share some stylish and efficient IKEA mudrooms we at IKD have designed.

Let’s take a look!

Why Design with IKD?

A Traditional Full of Storage Entryway

For IKD customers Mark and Tracy from Orlando, FL, it was important to pack a lot into a small amount of space for their IKEA mudroom.

“We both have traditional sensibilities so we wanted an area that matched the rest of our home while helping us keep things neat,” Tracy says.

With a small entryway to work with, we created a wall full of storagewith IKEA AXSTAD’s shaker-style matte white doors with plenty of space to store coats, boots, nags and more. This combined with added drawers on the bottom established a clean, traditional look.

Mudroom Budget $3000

“One of the unique elements of our space is its high ceilings, which we wanted to take advantage of to add more storage options,” Tracy adds.

Therefore, the couple chose to leave some open cubbies at the top of the tall cabinets, which serve as a perfect display space for plants or other decorative items – plus it adds warmth to the white, traditional theme.

Tying the space together as well is IKEA’s NYDALLA handles in bronze which add a richness to the layout.

“IKD really maximized our space and we couldn’t be happier with the results!” Tracy concludes.

A Versatile L-Shaped IKEA Mudroom

One of the main benefits of an IKEA mudroom is versatility. This was precisely the case when we created a mudroom design for IKD customers Tim and Danielle (andtheir two children) from Glen Cove, NY.

“We have a very active lifestyle with our kids in sports and our hectic work schedule, so we needed storage options that would keep us organized as a family,” Tim says.

To that end, the L-shaped design provides a masterclass in the use of the space.

For starters, we used IKEA’s LERHYTTAN doors in light gray and KALLRÖR stainless steel handles, which establishes a clean, sleek look.

We then combined tall cabinets for coat and boot storage. The IKEA tall cabinet found on the opposite side has internal drawers and other shelves ideal for the kids’ sports uniforms. The base cabinets can be used for mail sorting and school supplies.

Likewise, the corner cabinet has a carousel, which can be used to organize and store less used, or seasonal items. Lastly, our design team found some additional space for Tim and Danielle and included some cabinets to be used as a banquette as well.

“The design layout and use of IKEA cabinetry really made this a perfect catch-it-all space for us,” Tim concludes.

Mix and Match IKEA Mudroom

For IKD customer Monique from San Diego, CA, her IKEA mudroom was all about the modern touch.

“This was a small space toward the back of the house and I wanted a small mudroom, however I didn’t know how to achieve one with a modern look. I had also purchased IKEA PAX before and liked it. I was familiar with PAX and wanted those functionalities in this space as well,” Monique says.

To accommodate Monique’s mudroom design idea – and her $4,000 budget – we decided to mix and match.

Specifically, we used IKEA PAX frames with modern-looking IKEA FARDAL doors in high gloss light gray to set a warm, transitional theme.

We then included SEKTION cabinets for a small banquette area combined with IKEA ASKERSUND doors in light ash effect.

This complemented the IKEA FARDAL gray doors and provided interest to the modern design.

And although the design has a modern look, that did not mean it was not functional. In fact, the wall cabinets with IKEA ASKERSUND doors also provide additional storage options.

Lastly, we used the IKEA UTRUSTA push-to-open device on SEKTION cabinets to avoid the use of handles, which added to the clean look.

“I was so surprised at the results of my IKEA mudroom and so glad that it came in under budget as well,” Monique concludes.

Soremember, you do not have to get down and dirty with your IKEA mudroom. It can be a space that fits your home’s design theme – and budget – very easily!
