Budget-friendly design solutions that will make your IKEA home office look like a million bucks
The key to an effective IKEA home office is to make it work smarter, not harder.
In fact, if you’re looking to increase your personal productivity (with a dedicated space for bills or your professional needs), then an IKEA office design is the way to go.
Of course, it must not only appeal to your lifestyle, but also your budget.
That’s why our design team would like to share with you some examples of what we’ve done recently in IKEA office design.
These are smart offices with different layouts, styles and sizes – all completed using IKEA SEKTION cabinetry framework combined with IKEA cabinetry fronts.
And each was completed for under $3,000.
What’s not to like?
So if you’ve visited HOUZZ or Pinterest for office design ideas and are looking for more inspiration, then you’ve come to the right place.
Let’s take a look!

Why Design with IKD?
Minimalist IKEA Office
When IKD customer Brooke from Nashville, TN, came to us with her office design wishlist, the goal was to have it reflect the rest of her home.
“I work from home and wanted a clean, efficient space using IKEA cabinetry that matched the modern theme,” Brooke says.
The challenge however, was to achieve this within a budget of $3,000.
To accomplish this minimalist office space, we recommended IKEA’s VOXTORP Dark Gray doors, combined with IKEA’s TUTEMO open upper cabinets in Ash veneer.
The TUTEMO cabinetry adds a touch of warmth and its open shelving provides an interesting design aesthetic as its backlit as well. Functionally, it holds older documents that Brooke can refer to when needed.
For the floating cabinets that enhance the L-shaped desk area, we used IKEA’s BESTA system with IKEA’s KALLVIKEN doors in Dark Gray concrete effect, which are ideal for storing work supplies.
“This IKEA home office helps me be more efficient and has the clean, simple look I wanted to achieve!” Brooke concludes.
IKEA Desk and Storage Nook
For IKD customers Dale and Karen from Trenton, NJ, their home office area does double duty.
Featured in their bedroom, they wanted a layout that could double as storage and a desk station – while staying within their budget of $5,000.
We did better than that.
We selected IKEA’s AXSTAD fronts in matte white, which maintains the traditional theme of the bedroom, while the tall cabinets with internal roll-out drawers provide easy access to the interior.
Meanwhile, the top portion of the cabinet has adjustable storage shelves – ideal for books or upright folders.
“One of my favorite parts of the design is how the base cabinet was cut in height, and the other tall cabinet was left open for decorative items and office supplies,” Karen adds.
There are also two floating shelves above the desk area to display additional art pieces or a vase of flowers. And since Dale is an avid reader, it also leaves a spot for his glasses!
When the project was done, we had designed an IKEA office that fit Dale and Karen’s needs, and fit their budget at $3,000.
“We couldn’t be happier with how our IKEA home office turned out!” she says.
Custom IKEA Work Station
This IKEA home office for IKD customer Dirk from Cleveland, OH, was all about working hard and playing hard.
Dirk explains: “I’m very busy with not a lot of extra time, so I wanted a versatile work station. I had done some research online but needed help getting the design where I wanted it.”
From a design standpoint, one of the main challenges was that the space was being adapted from a previously small office room.
Therefore, storage space was at a premium.
Working with Dirk’s budget of $3,000, we selected Semihandmade custom fronts in Supermatte Shaker Gray and Semihandmade Oak floating shelves which provide a lot of upper storage options while taking advantage of the tall ceilings in the space.
This combination also balances the space with a warm, yet airy feel, making it feel larger.
That theme is also carried through with the bench on the adjacent wall, which doubles as storage for work out gear.
Talk about a perfect way to take a working (out) lunch!
And even better, Dirk got a custom IKEA home office that fit his budget.
He concludes: “I was so surprised by how much storage was incorporated into the design, and feel like this IKEA office is really tailored to my needs.”
Glad to hear it Dirk.
Remember, these home offices are just some examples of the ways we can make IKEA cabinetry for you too!
