Customers who entertain will get plenty of ideas from this remodeled kitchen

For IKD customer Timothy from Sykesville, MD and his family, his renovated IKEA kitchen design took a natural progression.

Literally.

“When we moved into our house, the kitchen was extremely dark with the floor, cabinets, countertop, and a lack of natural light. We wanted to make the kitchen as bright as possible using natural light and the materials chosen,” he says.

Old Kitchen Before Renos

To address this, the family selected IKEA cabinetry, including IKEA AXSTAD drawer fronts in matte white; IKEA AXSTAD glass door in matte white IKEA MAXIMERA drawers in high, medium, and low configurations; IKEA FORBATTRA toe kicks in matte white, IKEA FORBATTRA cover panel, IKEA FORBATTRA matte white rounded deco strip and IKEA UTRUSTA corner base cabinet pull-out fittings and hinges.

These were combined with IKEA SEKTION cabinetry framework (including SEKTION base cabinets frames in white and white IKEA SEKTION corner wall cabinet frames) and Borghini Silver quartz countertops as well as a variety of appliances, such as a Toshiba EM925A5A-SS microwave; a Frigidaire FFGH3054US stove, an LG LFXS28968S refrigerator; a Cosmo 63190 ventilation hood and a Lordear 30-inch farmhouse sink.

And by opting not to hire an installer, the family was able to save its budget dollars for the cabinets, quartz countertop, and new appliances.

But while this product lineup provided the aesthetic and function his family wanted, Timothy needed design guidance to pull the kitchen design idea off.

“We weren’t sure what our best layout was going to be. Could we fit an island? Should we keep our peninsulas? We also had the far corner of our kitchen that was unused space and we weren’t sure how to fill it,” he explains.

Why Design with IKD?

Enter IKD’s design team, who helped the family determine the best and most efficient layout.

“Our kitchen is quite long and narrow, and since IKD has seen many different kitchen layouts and was familiar with IKEA cabinetry, it made sense to utilize their expertise,” he adds.

By utilizing IKD’s kitchen design services, Timothy was able to fit in a peninsula island for serving when entertaining, and space for his children to do their homework; as well as maximizing underused space for storage.

Completing the look is DEARLAN Rectangular Chandelier Farmhouse kitchen lighting; Brilliant Evolution Wireless LED Puck Lights for undercabinet lighting; Commercial Electric recessed lighting and Montagna Rustic Bay tile flooring, as well as ample natural light from the window over the sink area and sliding glass doors near the peninsula.

Let’s take a look at how Timothy’s IKEA kitchen came together!

Team Effort

The remodeled kitchen required a team effort to include all of the design wishes for this family of six.

“Since we entertain frequently, we wanted to have lots of counter space for food and drinks. We also had unused space in the corner that we were unsure what to do with. Fortunately, working with the IKEA kitchen design team at IKD, we came up with a design that is better than we could have hoped for,” he says.

White IKEA Kitchen

This was critical since Timothy was doing the installation himself and other installation issues presented themselves.

For instance, he first tried to position an island into the design before finally opting for an overhang off of the peninsula.

“We also swapped out the initial design of corner cabinets in the peninsula where it meets the wall to normal drawer cabinets that open to the other side,” he explains.

“Overall, the cabinets were very easy to put together. Once put together, the cabinets were set into place using the IKD precise measurements to ensure that everything would fit,” he adds.

With an initial budget of $15,000, Timothy chose IKEA cabinetry for the cost, considering the large number of cabinets needed.

“We didn’t have it in the budget to do custom wood cabinets. But once we looked into IKEA cabinets, we were pleased with the reviews for the durability and modularity. We were able to tailor the cabinets to best work for our kitchen when deciding between drawers or doors,” he says.

During the renovation, the family also decided to splurge on a few items, such as the LG refrigerator, that were not in the initial budget.

“This caused us to go over our budget but was worth it in the end,” he says.

They also decided on a Quartz countertop that is white with streaks of silver in it.

Floating IKEA Shelves

“The silver gives enough contrast and it also gives the brightness of the white. We decided on quartz due to the durability and lack of yearly maintenance required,” he adds.

Positive Feedback

Timothy summarizes his design experience.

“We’re really happy with our decision to use IKEA and IKD. IKEA will sometimes get a bad reputation, but these cabinets are better quality than I thought. They are sturdy, glide very easily, and we love the soft close feature. Everyone that’s visited our kitchen has raved about the beauty of the kitchen and is amazed when they hear the cabinets are from IKEA,” he says.

Stainless Steel Appliances

He concludes: “This was my first kitchen renovation and while sometimes challenging, it went smoother than I could have hoped.”
