This project shows the results of using the proper IKEA products and having the right design guidance

For this master bedroom project, the term “cleaning up the closet” took on new meaning.

So says IKD customer Mary Beth from Albuquerque, NM, who wanted a master bedroom IKEA walk-in closet that was practical, looked nice and helped her maximize space.

“I had a budget of $2,000 and wanted the closet to tie into the clean, modern design of the bedroom and the rest of the home. I really selected IKEA cabinetry because of the affordable cost and the stylish looks,” she says. (Note: With IKD’s guidance, she was able to stay under her budget with a total expenditure for her IKEA products at just $1,853.99!)

To that end, Mary Beth did a lot of the initial research into her project, Googling blogs that featured “IKEA PAX closets,” and searching for examples of IKEA closet designs. She also installed her PAX closet herself — along withthe help of a family member. However, getting to that point required professional design guidance from IKD’s design team.

She explains: “We originally had a quote from another company that was very expensive and I stumbled upon various blogs of IKEA designs [done by IKD]. Someone had reviewed their closet a year later and that the quality of the work and cabinetry was holding up.”

Plus, she notes that since she lives seven hours away from the nearest IKEA location, getting the design and purchase plans done correctly the first time was imperative. “I cannot simply run to IKEA to purchase ‘the fix’ if something went wrong, so that saved me a lot of time and money,” she says.

Let’s see how Mary Beth and IKD put her closet together!

Working Together on IKEA PAX Closets

After some initially very frustrating experiences trying to use IKEA’s PAX closet planner software, Mary Beth searched for professional design help.

Enter IKD’s design team who walked Mary Beth through the design process.

“I sent IKD images of my closet and then ones that I found online. They designed a fabulous master bedroom closet for me. I asked for one change in the process and they quickly returned the new version to me as well. It was then just a matter of entering the PAX planner code into the IKEA Website to order the materials and have everything delivered,” she says.

She continues: “Hands down, the IKEA PAX closet planner software was the biggest obstacle for this project. That’s why I’m so grateful for IKD. I realized when I put the closet together that IKD had picked out special corner cabinet designs that I hadn’t considered for the space. I remember thinking how poorly this project could have turned out if I hadn’t worked with them.”

Master Closet PAX shelves

Specifically, the closet features the IKEA PAX wardrobe frame and IKEA KOMPLEMENT Series interior organizers and drawers. This includes floor-to-ceiling storage options; such as glass front cabinetry; shelving for sweaters and other items; multiple areas for hanging shirts and suits, and even an area to display treasured keepsakes.

She also points out that it was these types of product selections– and knowing how to properly use them — that made the difference for the project. “During the design process I was reminded of IKD’s knowledge of the product as they clued me into some design constraints PAX has when you want to add doors on the cabinets and how to make that work,” she adds.

Another example of this is how the PAX wardrobe frame is semi-closed and better conceals her belongings as opposed to the open-rack look Mary Beth had in her previous closet. Plus, PAX is a modular closet system so it provides flexibility for her storage needs as well.

Closet Design Using IKEA Pax

With that in mind, not only did the final result come in under budget, but the streamlined look of the space worked perfectly with the clean, modern design theme of the rest of the home as well as the master bedroom.

Save No Expense

According to Mary Beth, there are some very practical things to remember when initiating your next IKEA project.

Master Closet Design

“My advice is to spend the money on the little finishes. I believe that IKEA cabinetry looks best when you invest in the full package. The extra costs of the glass drawer fronts, or the KOMPLEMENT glass shelves and pullout drawers, for example, makes all of the difference,” she says.

She concludes: “I was so happy with the results of my master bedroom closet that I’ve hired IKD to design a second closet for me. I think working with IKD saved me headaches and prevented poor planning on my part!”
