Do you have a large room in your home that just sits there and doesn’t get much use? If so, it only makes sense to get a little creative and maximize the space. Doing so is sure to improve your quality of life.
With IKEA and its versatile IKEA Kitchen Sektion cabinets, you can design a full customized media center. When we say customized, we mean it. We make it easy to create a complete “furniture” unit that looks like it’s always belonged there. And best of all? It’s reasonably priced..
By getting up to speed on a few of our IKEA design hacks, you can implement customization options you probably had no idea existed. Ready for some inspiration? Keep reading to get the details on three of our favorite customized IKEA media center designs.
Media Center #1: The Star of the Room

Total IKEA material cost: $ 2,073
Extra IKEA items needed for installation : $ 1,608
This design revolves around two things: impact and storage. It includes floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, symmetry, open white shelving for contrast, and a dedicated speaker space on the side. There is no shortage of general storage space.
Why We Like It:
The striking green IKEA Aspudden doors and Kallror door handles turn this media wall into a real focal point, while the open white shelves provide balance. It’s more than just a place to place the TV; it’s an architectural feature that offers depth and character to the room.

What’s Unique?
The entire Media Center was designed with IKEA’s Sektion cabinets – their kitchen line. IKEA’s kitchen cabinet product range is vast and that makes it ideal for transforming into a custom media center.
Media Center 2: Built-In Style and Subtle Sophistication
Our design was to recess into a niche, making it seem like the media center was built when the home was built. How did we do this? We strategically cut and reconfigured IKEA kitchen cabinet panels.

Total IKEA material cost: $ 2,551
Extra IKEA items needed for installation : $ 334
Contrary to popular belief, this is possible. The media center incorporates open shelving with matching oak interiors, clever build-outs through custom-cut cover panels, a great deal of general storage space, and seamless integration into the wall niche.
Why We Like It:
The recessed built-in proves that you can get that highly customizable look without spending a alot. This media center is just right and an ideal addition to the room.

What We Used:
The doors are IKEA’s kitchen SINARP, and using SINARP cover panels, we created 2 panels (15” x 90”) cut to 12” D x 60” H. 1 panel (15” x 90”) cut to 15” D x 60” H. And 1 panel (15” x 90”) cut into 5 shelves (14” x 11 ¾”).
Media Center 3: Sound, Style, and Smart Storage
This design is great for music lovers and those who simply want some flexibility in a multi-use space. The warm wood tone provides a rich look while the drawer-centered design ensures nobody knows about your clutter.

Total IKEA material cost: $ 1,645
Extra IKEA items needed for installation : $ 1,554
Within the media center, you’ll find a wall-to-wall layout, a standalone drawer base for a record player, several drawer banks for organized storage, open shelves with matching interiors, and floating custom drawer bases.
Why We Like It:
For music lovers, this media center is a dream come true. It’s functional yet aesthetically pleasing. A clever way to turn an entire wall into an organized, stylish hub.

What We Used:
The doors are IKEA’s SINARP, and the handles are IKEA’s KALERUM. The base drawer cabinet uses a SEKTION / MAXIMERA base cabinet with 3 drawers. For the five floating drawer bases shown, we modified wall frame cabinets as follows: 2 units at 24” x 14 ¾” x 15” cut to 10” H and 3 units at 30” x 14 ¾” x 15” cut to 10” H
The drawer fronts were 2 pieces at 24” x 10” and 3 pieces at 30” x 10”. The actual drawers used were 2 MAXIMERA at 24” x 14 ¾” and 3 MAXIMERA at 30” x 14 ¾”
