Designing well planned areas that draw the line between inside and out.

If you’re looking to re-imagine storage options in your home using IKEA cabinets — either while remodeling or with a new construction — IKEA mudrooms are the answer. They draw the line between inside and outdoors and allow you to enjoy both stress-free. So what do customers want in mudrooms? Number one, homeowners tell us they need dedicated and well-designed storage to better organize outdoor clothes and gear and to do so in a streamlined way.

“For storage, customers prefer doors over drawers to better hide things, like shoes, boots and sports equipment for the kids. People have busy lives so they look to conceal clutter. Built-in cabinets are a great solution here. IKD’s mudroom design process is just as detailed as our IKEA closet or kitchen designs. So we’ll think through the mudroom’s usage and storage capacity that fit your unique needs,” says IKD designer Merari.

This includes creating a checklist of how you intend to use the space and combining IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system with IKEA cabinets or custom fronts from third-party front manufacturers, like Semihandmade (SHM) and Reform.

Two IKEA mudrooms we’ve designed recently reflect these approaches. There’s the mudroom designed for customer Shane from San Francisco, CA, who loved Mid Century Modern aesthetics and who was looking to maximize storage as part of his new construction home. The other mudroom was designed for customer Elisia and her spouse from Columbia, SC, who are intrepid travelers and who needed custom organization to readily access their travel gear. Working with IKD designer Albert, the couple combined IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen cabinet system with Semihandmade’s Supermatte Slab Light Grey doors, at $5,504, to achieve a space with a mix of open shelves, niches, doors, drawers and even a bench seat. The results are two very unique IKEA mudrooms that are warm and inviting, yet still practical, with plenty of storage and organization options.

Let’s see how these mudrooms came together!

Why Design with IKD?

Mid Century IKEA Mudroom

There’s more than meets the eye with Shane’s Mid Century Modern-style mudroom.

“The four 92″ tall units seem simple, at just 24″ wide they’re unimposing. But when opened you’ll see why the room is so organized, there are five deep IKEA MAXIMERA drawers in three of them and two shelves at the top. This provides a ton of storage capacity,” says IKD designer Daniel.

The 264-square foot mudroom features IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system with Reform custom doors in white oak which reach to the top of the 93.5″ ceiling. The cabinets are accented by IKEA BORGHAMN handles and IKEA KASKER white mineral effect quartz custom countertops. In the same corner is open shelving above the countertops as well as a 32″ (L) x 17″ (W) x 10″ (D) Kraus undermount sink — all punctuated by an orange color accent. Notably, even though Shane sacrificed approximately 30″ of space for the single bowl sink, the design still added up to 133″ of cabinet length. This also creates plenty of storage for jackets, coats and shoes (with the option to rinse off any muddy items).

To make this work, each of the high cabinets were modified using IKD’s signature IKEA cabinet hacks, with the cabinets hacked from 90″ (H) to 88″ (H). (Note: For installation reasons 1″ of free space is required between the ceiling and cabinet). The product lineup also includes an IKEA FORBATTRA toe kick; IKEA FIXA countertop support fixture, galvanized and IKEA UTRUSTA hinges. Shane’s five IKEA cabinets and one panel – as well as all the materials necessary for customization and installation — totaled $2,981.

Inside Out

For a space with lots of architectural challenges, Elisia’s mudroom had a lot of storage solutions.

“The space has 12′ cathedral ceiling so there were obstacles. We wanted a custom look that did not look like a mudroom and it had to have open shelving and internal drawers. We’re so pleased with the Semihandmade doors and how comfortable the space is — it’s my favorite room in the house!” says Elisia.

Elisia and IKD designer Merari combined IKEA’s SKETION kitchen system with Semihandmade’s Supermatte Slab Light Grey door style. The cabinets were then built-in with drywall achieving a clean, organized look. A small open niche and tall open shelves were custom made (not by IKEA) which creates an area for the couple to rest after taking off their shoes. This also leaves plenty of storage for jackets, outerwear and other equipment for their travels.

Merari notes the design required custom cabinet cuts and stacking due to the ceiling configurations, architectural elements and the storage requirements. This included custom cutting SEKTION base cabinet frames from 21″ (W) x 24″ (D) x 30″ (H) to 21″ (W) x 24″ (D) x 20″ (H) and putting shelving to replace the top rail of the base cabinets. Four distinct final heights were also designed with the cabinets on the left half of the design designed atop an existing 29″ high drywall base housing HVAC equipment. The base cabinets are covered with white shaker false cabinet fronts as well to continue the streamlined look. This really gives the space a transitional appearance — part mudroom and part living room — with a unique blend of concealed storage and open shelving.

The product lineup is concluded with IKEA UTRUSTA hinges with built-in damper; IKEA MAXIMERA drawers; IKEA FIXA drill template and a SEKTION suspension rail. In total, Elisia’s 14 IKEA cabinets and three panels plus all materials necessary for installation costed only $2,746!
