Practical advice for making an IKEA laundry room fun, functional and stylish

Creating a dynamic IKEA laundry room doesn’t have to put you into a spin.

In fact, our expert design team has put together five laundry room design ideas that will show you that there are always options available for a perfect IKEA laundry room.

These ideas incorporate IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework along with custom cabinetry; space-saving solutions; lighting applications and tips for combining your laundry room with an IKEA mudroom.

They also, of course, showcase how to maximize IKEA cabinetry such as IKEA AXSTAD; IKEA VARIERA cover plates, and IKEA’s STROMLINJE LED countertop lights, among others.

So if you’ve previously been searching for examples of laundry room designs and laundry room layouts on Web sites like HOUZZ or Pinterest, then you’ve come to the right place.

The following information will really help IKEA customers like you gain valuable information — and inspiration — for your upcoming IKEA laundry room design.

Let’s take a look!

Rethink the Layout

Your laundry room can be a space to have fun and take design risks. So, why not rethink the entire laundry room layout for a fully functional space?

Our recent IKEA SEKTION laundry room design for Joanne in Claremont, IL showcases how we alternated between exposed and closed cabinetry using IKEA’s AXSTAD Matte White doors.

This was a narrow space and Joanne wanted open cabinetry to store laundry baskets and keep essentials at hand. Since SEKTION cabinets only come in white, we used IKEA’s VARIERA cover plates to fill the unused holes.

“These really give a nice, finished look and make the space much more workable for me,” she says. “I also like how the wood feel adds color and warmth to the space.”

Meanwhile, we added a custom touch by incorporating floating shelves from Semihandmade. These are featured above the open section to keep the small space feeling more open and visually interesting.

Stack Machines

One of our main tips is to always make a checklist that gets you thinking about how you’ll use the space. Then you’ll want to see how that plan works with the size of your laundry room layout.

If space is at a premium, you can clear up additional room by stacking machines, for instance.

This layout featured a small space that needed to accommodate plenty of activities.

After stacking the machines we even had enough space to include a pull-out for laundry supplies, a drawer base cabinet with hidden internal drawers, and a custom tall built-in unit with third party hanging racks.

Make It Dirt Friendly

An IKEA laundry room and IKEA mudroom as a shared space require some serious organization. You might say it requires getting a little down and dirty!

So yes, we suggest you start off by determining the intended use and activities of the space.

Ask yourself:

  • Will you need a seat to take off your boots?
  • Or maybe storage space for seasonal clothing?
  • Will you be folding clothes, or simply need storage for your laundry baskets?

Once you answer these questions, you could then better designate a mudroom area to keep dirt away from your freshly washed linens.

We did just that for Sharon, when we designed her laundry room and mudroom. She wanted a durable space that was capable of handling their family’s busy schedules, while also providing a warm, inviting space when entering the home from the backyard.

To achieve this, we added a small banquette area (with additional storage below) along with a tall cabinet on one side of the room; and then created a designated laundry area on the other side, including a small sink, drawers and a tall cabinet to maximize storage space.

Mud room done

“My husband is a landscape architect, which means he often comes home covered in mud. Because the laundry room doubles as a mudroom, I needed a bench so my husband can remove his muddy items, stick them in the wash, and the dark doors hide any evidence of dirt.”Diane offers.

Install Task Lighting

Without a doubt, one of the least understood aspects of good laundry room design is lighting.

You should know however, that besides tying everything together, task lighting will enhance the look and feel of your laundry room. And for the budget-conscious, IKEA’s lighting solutions are also inexpensive and easy to install.

For instance, you can add IKEA’s STROMLINJE LED countertop lights which will make folding clothes much easier. Plus you will achieve an even light across your countertop and cords will be kept organized since the units connect directly to each other.

How clever!

Now, if you have glass cabinet doors, you can use the IKEA VAXMYRA LED spotlight to brighten the inside or use them to create cozy, mood lighting under a shelf. These are very easy to install as they can be mounted with double-sided tape or a simple screw.

Both IKEA’s STROMLINJE and IKEA VAXMYRA lights are controlled with a remote. They also give you several options as you can turn them on, off, choose colors and warm or cold light, among other features.

How about some in-drawer lighting? Yes? Good, you’re in luck! The IKEA OMLOPP LED light strip will give you a good view of things inside your drawers; ideal for older customers who prefer extra lighting.

Best of all, they are easy to install and they switch on an off automatically when you open or close the drawers, so no energy is wasted.

Pretty bright idea, right?

Make It Your Own

Above all, your IKEA laundry room cabinets should reflect your unique decorating style and blend with your home decor. This is where you can really customize things.

For example, use that bold Semihandmade Juniper Shaker Door to complement your all- whiteIKEA kitchen. This would tie everything together and achieve a cohesive look.

You could also use the same butcher block countertop as in your coffee station; and then incorporate those trendy floor tiles you’ve been eyeing on Pinterest. This is not your grandmother’s laundry room so have fun with it!

Green laundry room

We trust that you are suitably inspired about the prospects for your IKEA laundry room. As long as you apply these tips, there’s a good chance your project will be the inspiration for that next IKEA customer as well.
