Our Designers’ Picks: IKEA’s New Kitchen Items

Getting insider perspective on the top IKEA new products for 2020

Each year the IKD kitchen designers anxiously wait for IKEA’s catalog.

It’s nice to go through the pages and find inspiration and new items, but the truth is we want something more than just a picture showing a new beautifully eclectic serving cart.

We (and I’m speaking for myself) want specifics about the new IKEA products; style, size, functionality, etc.

However, there are some new products not even announced in the IKEA 2020 catalog!

So, how can IKD certified kitchen designers create the best IKEA kitchen for you if you aren’t aware of ALL the products available?

Our designers have put together a list of our favorite new items from the IKEA 2020 introductions. These items include the IKEA NISSAFORS Cart, the IKEA BREDSJÖN Apron Front Sink, and new door styles.

Hopefully, it will help you out through the exciting journey of new IKEA kitchen introductions.

IKEA NISSAFORS Cart

The 19-7/8”x11-3/4”x32-5/8″ IKEA NISSAFORS stainless steel cart is the taller and slimmer brother of the well-known IKEA RÅSKOG utility cart, and a favorite of IKD kitchen designer, Meyer.

“This versatile cart provides a lot of design flexibility as it can fit in small spaces and provide extra storage in any room (as a serving cart), and even the deck. The possibilities are limitless,” Meyer says.

With a sturdy construction, the black matte finish blends well with any decor, giving it many seamless design options. This makes it a perfect complement for any IKEA hacks anywhere around the house.

BREDSJÖN Apron Front Sink

IKD kitchen designer Paulina says that the IKEA BREDSJÖN apron front sink is a stand-out new product for 2020.

She explains: “This sink comes in 24″ and 30″ of width, and not only is it reasonable ($261.50) but follows the tradition of apron sinks with convenient, easy installation options.

Also, from an ergonomic standpoint, apron sinks eliminate the countertop jutting out in the front of the sink, reducing the need to lean over and strain.

Specifically, this is a scratch-resistant stainless steel sink with a high (9-7/8″) apron front designed for an under-mount installation. IKEA’s clever solution of an under-the-sink sound absorbing material reduces the sound when using the sink as well.

In addition, the stainless steel sink blends very well with more modern sensibilities, but realistically, fits into most kitchen styles.

Designer’s tip: This stainless steel look is in contrast to the traditional white apron front sink which is often more suited for a Farmhouse or Classic/Traditional kitchen design theme.

New IKEA Doorstyles

IKEA doesn’t fall behind when it comes to kitchen trends, especially with color and style.

For 2020, IKEA introduces the BODARP Gray-Green door. It’s produced using a foil made of recycled materials and renewable electricity.

IKD kitchen designer Florence explains: “The gray-green was a nice color addition to IKEA’s door colors we’ve been used to in the past. Standard colors were typically White, Off White, Gray, Wood Effect and Black.”

She also notes that the matte finish gray-green shade keeps the same Scandinavian feel on the color palette, which makes it the perfect modern-twist complement to any style.

2019 was the year of the two toned kitchens, whether as just an accent or as a statement wall, the pop colors we saw the most were blue and green.

For Classic/Traditional kitchen islands, we also recommend the new BODBYN deep dark and rich green, which works very well when paired with wood complements like countertops and floating shelves.

The BODBYN door has a beveled shaker-like panel which makes it perfect for traditional, classic IKEA kitchens. It’s resistant to moisture and super easy to keep clean.

One of our favorite designs using the BODBYN dark-green cabinetry was for IKD customers Ted and Samantha from Boca Raton, FL.

They had a traditional white kitchen and wanted ample storage and a large island. Not only did the BODBYN dark green doors provide a sense of warmth to the design but also an eye-catching punch of color.

IKD Kitchen Designer Picks AXSTAD Door

Lastly, is the new AXSTAD dark gray door style, which was an expected addition to the door style/color range, but noteworthy nonetheless.

According to IKD designer Mike: “This will be one of IKEA’s most famous fronts for the present year, so stay tuned!”

To give you an idea, the IKEA AXSTAD door is the modern version of the well-known BODBYN door. It features soft lines and an inset panel, and can be used in both modern and traditional kitchen designs.

The AXSTAD door was first featured in pure white and is now available in a gray version. Although it wasn’t included in the 2020 catalogue, it was a nice surprise to see it part of IKEA’s new introductions.

Remember that these new IKEA products are not just for kitchens either.
