Incorporating the essentials into a functional IKEA laundry room
Our customers share it all, and as certified designers, we listen!
They tell us their preferences with IKEA cabinetry; how an IKEA design will enhance their lifestyle and how they intend to use a space; whether it’s for entertaining, family downtime or simply to have an area that can withstand everyday wear and tear.
Basically, they tell us everything about every room in the house that we design for them.
That of course, includes laundry room design.
An IKEA laundry room – when done correctly – provides serious organizational opportunities for our customers.
We know how important that is!
We’ve compiled a few tips from customers of some pretty dynamic IKEA laundry rooms we’ve designed.
So, if you want a laundry room featuring IKEA cabinets, you’ll be interested to hear our customers’ tips on how to maximize your laundry room space, plus maybe a few IKEA hacks along the way.
Let’s look at some tips for designing a functional IKEA laundry room.

Keys to an IKEA Laundry Room Design
An IKEA laundry room will provide organization and efficiency, so you must be organized and efficient in planning it out.
A good start is to take note of how you’ll utilize the space.
Treat it how you would a grocery list.
Include all of the must-haves for your IKEA laundry room, such as counter space for folding clothes, a hanging rod or a trash pullout.
One option would be to use IKEA SEKTION pullouts, for instance, which could be used as hampers or to organize cleaning supplies.
IKEA’s open cabinet solutions, like IKEA VADHOLMA and IKEA TUTEMO can be used to store towels, linens and detergents.
One IKD customer, Jan from Topeka, KS, suggested SEKTION corner base cabinets with IKEA AXSTAD matte white for a traditional look and IKEA MAXIMERA drawers for linen storage.
Another option would be to select the IKEA ELVARLI two-section adjustable shelving unit as a way to store your laundry baskets.
Practical items too, like the stainless steel IKEA GRUNDTAL drying rack will make it much simpler to dry delicate items.
So, make a design wish list and we’ll make it happen!
Creative Use of Materials
Combining different door styles, or even custom fronts, can make a big splash in your IKEA laundry room.
We’ve done this so often that The New York Times recommends us as a unique kitchen design resource for customers considering custom doors for their IKEA cabinets.
IKD customer Pat and his wife Carol, from Chicago, IL, did just that when they selected custom doors from Semihandmade, IKEA KARLBY countertops and Semihandmade floating shelves to upgrade their remodeled IKEA laundry room.
Likewise, IKD customer William came to us with his laundry room design (part of a house renovation).
“Storage was a big thing for me. I really liked the idea of floating shelves in an open lay-out to create a modern design theme. Especially to make the smaller laundry room appear bigger,” William says.
Appliance Selection
Another tip shared is to select your appliances before IKD produces your final de-sign.
Yes, we can use “standard” sizes to get started, but we also need to check technical specifications, such as required clearances in the case of washers and dryers, to make sure the design follows them.
After all, you’ll want enough room for the door to swing out unobstructed on your front-load washer/dryer, right?
Also, you don’t want to place low shelving above a top-load washer because it won’t leave enough room to comfortably maneuver the lid.
Taking this simple step can make your entire project run much more smoothly!
IKEA Hacks to Maximize Storage
One of our favorite things is to create IKEA hacks, which is to say using IKEA products in areas other than their original intent.
Laundry room storage is a perfect area for that.
For instance, we used the Rev-A-Shelf Sidelines full-extension sliding basket for IKD customers John and Diane from Honolulu, HI, when we remodeled their laundry room.
“This hack was such a great idea! Once the laundry is folded and placed in each basket, the kids just come to the laundry room and pick up their clothes,” Diane says.
For larger laundry rooms, the Rev-A-Shelf Side Mounted, Pull-Down Closet Rod works beautifully with pressed shirts and slacks, especially when paired with the Rev-A-Shelf CIB Series ironing board, which is concealed in a pullout drawer.
Again, for larger laundry area, a banquette built out of SEKTION cabinets or custom cut cabinets is another option, such as with IKD customers Jack and Linda.
We hacked IKEA cabinets to build a banquette in the mudroom section of their full-house remodel and used tall cabinets to keep seasonal clothing out of sight.
“We love our custom banquette. The IKEA AXSTAD doors in Dark Gray are easier to clean and the IKEA PINNARP countertop in Ash adds a sense of warmth,” Jack says.
Talk to the IKEA Experts
Well, that’s us!
We’re the design experts, and we’ll design a fully functional IKEA laundry room for you.
We can tell you why choosing a small sink for your IKEA laundry room is the way to go.
Or, why – regardless of what size sink you choose – placing a sink right next to a tall cabinet or vertical surface won’t leave enough counter space and can cause costly water damage.
And if you’re looking for a laundry room with a modern design theme, we’d recommend IKEA’s VOXTORP Dark Gray, like we did for IKD customer Sharon from Great Neck, NY.
As you can see, with our design expertise – and these tips from our customers – any room in the home, especially the laundry room, can pack a lot of punch using IKEA cabinetry!
