A further review of kitchens designed by IKD using Semihandmade fronts
Everyone likes a good ‘Top 10’ list and our designers are no exception. This is especially true when discussing the best IKEA kitchen designs from IKD featuring Semihandmade door fronts.
If you recall, in Part 1 of our two-part series, called “5 Projects from IKD Using Semihandmade,” our team shared a variety of kitchen designs including a built-in IKEA kitchen with plenty of style; a small IKEA kitchen that packs a surprising amount of storage space; and a timeless IKEA kitchen that feels fresh and classic, among others.
Now, we’d like to add five more IKEA kitchens to the list. These include an eclectic IKEA kitchen featuring Semihandmade SuperMatte Slab NightSky island cabinets for IKD customers Lori and Mark; a cozy kitchen for customers Sam and Dana; and a dramatic, retro-style IKEA kitchen with plenty of concealed accessories for IKD customers John and Patricia. (IKD has been recommended by The New York Times as a design resource for customers considering custom doors for their cabinets.)
That said, if you’ve been researching examples of kitchen designs on HOUZZ and Pinterest, that’s great. We’re confident you’ll find even more design inspiration here. So, when you’re ready to start your IKEA kitchen you’ll know exactly what you want.
Let’s take a look!

Why Design with IKD?
Trend Topic IKEA Kitchen
For IKD customers Eleanor and Peter from Wilmington, DE, the sky was the limit for their IKEA kitchen.
IKD designer Merari explains: “Taking advantage of the architecture of high ceilings in this small kitchen we used vertical storage and stackable cabinets close to the ceiling.”
Specifically, the space combines IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework with Semihandmade DIY Shaker door fronts inbeige for the perimeter cabinets and Semihandmade DIY Shaker door fronts inblack for the island, establishing a balance of a minimalist style with noble materials such as quartz countertop and the touch of gold color of the handles. It also establishes an efficient workflow as the couple entertain a lot and often have many visitors. “This is the place where all your friends will get enticed to take a pic and post on social media,” Merari adds, noting this was all accomplished for $2,500.
The free-standing custom hood is a centerpiece of the space as well, and immediately draws your attention. The IKEA kitchen is completed with several accessories, such as a pull-out for the trash can, IKEA MAXIMERA drawers on the base and tall cabinet units along with IKEA FORBATTRA toe kicks. Other notable items include the panel-ready (concealed) dishwasher and refrigerator which add to the style and efficiency as well.
A Splash of Color
Looking for an eclectic kitchen, IKD customers Lori and Mark from Los Angeles, CA came to the right place.
“The design of this kitchen teaches us to take risks with colors and to incorporate our originality and creativity when cooking,” says IKD designer Meyer. And, it was achieved for under $4,000.
Specifically, the space features IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework with Semihandmade’s SuperMatte Slab Night Sky for the island cabinets; Semihandmade’s SuperMatte Slab in White for the lower cabinets, and Semihandmade’s Classic Walnut for the tall cabinets. That said, before you think this kitchen is all sizzle and no steak, these dynamic cabinets also provide a ton of storage options. This includes a CBC (corner Lazy Susan);a pull-out for trash cans, IKEA MAXIMERA internal drawers, and white IKEA UTRUSTA shelving.
Meyer explains: “By having a lot of storage in the base cabinets such as in the drawers, pull-outs and internal shelves, it gives us the opportunity to create an open concept by adding shelves instead of wall cabinets – along with infinite possibilities for incorporating the color.”
Lori concludes: “We love our open-style kitchen from IKD. When our guests visit they love it too and inject extra energy into the space. Even our dog Ralph loves it because IKD thought to provide a dedicated area in the kitchen for him to enjoy his food!”
Cozy IKEA Kitchen
Designed and nominated by IKD designer Carlos, this textured wood kitchen for IKD customers Sam and Dana in Boulder, CO is cozy as can be.
Carlos offers: “This kitchen features Semihandmade’s Impression Tahoe door style. The door style and the warm wood materials make this a place where cooking is a relaxed experience.”He adds that the light tones of the wood create the feeling of spaciousness and the different sizes of the MAXIMERA drawers allow Sam and Dana to store their kitchen utensils as well as small appliances. Remarkably, this was all completed for under $2,000!
In addition to the IKEA MAXIMERA drawers for storage and a pull-out IKEA HALLBAR recycling bin, the space also features a unique integrated look with the microwave set into the cabinets. “Having a microwave oven in a tall cabinet allows us to define the area for cooking and baking on the same wall, with enough storage to carry out these tasks,” Carlos says. “The apron sink turns this modern style into a homier one, gives the kitchen personality and the neutral color easily adapts to stainless steel appliances.”
White IKEA Kitchen
Designed for IKD customers Leah and Tom from Sayville, NY, this white IKEA kitchen is elegance personified.
The kitchen features IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework with Semihandmade’s SuperMatte Shaker style door fronts in white and quartz countertops, IKD designer Javier says.
“The white color of the cabinets and the high ceilings in the kitchen provide light, spaciousness, and style,” he offers.“SHM offers a decorative frame to stylize this type of kitchen. It also gives us the opportunity to combine various colors and textures. And by combining a white custom hood with a wood accent, we managed to give an unexpected touch to the design as well.”
He continues: “We also chose to place quartz with gray veins for the cover and the backsplash, thus maintaining the range of neutral colors.” In addition, the space features tons of storage options, including stacked vertical storage and over-the-fridge cabinets with horizontal doors and IKEA MAXIMERA drawers. Likewise, the island with a double row of cabinets provides greater storage in base furniture as well. Even more impressively, this was all done for under $4,000!
“You can never go wrong with white cabinets,” Javier concludes.
Retro IKEA Kitchen
According to IKD designer Florence, this kitchen designed for IKD customers John and Patricia from Chicago, IL is as dramatic as they come.
She explains: “Color Night Sky fused with the timelessness of Semihandmade’s Super Matte Shaker style create a totally modern kitchen and a dramatic atmosphere by matching the walls with the color of the cabinet.”
The space features unique storage options such as a blind cabinet with pull-out fitting, a pull-out for trash, and IKEA MAXIMERA drawers to complement the efficient work triangle for cooking.
Ultimately though, it is color that takes center stage here, she notes.“Color is the main protagonist of this kitchen, maintaining an open design, floating shelves, and few accessories, this kitchen features a true minimalist style. The U-Shaped design is highly sought after for having plenty of storage space, counter space and for being aesthetically pleasing.” And, believe it or not, was all done within a budget of $2,000!
Hopefully these designs have whet your palette as to the design potential of IKEA kitchens featuring Semihandmade cabinet fronts. We look forward to designing and sharing more, and maybe one of the next kitchens we share will be yours!
