Learn how IKD can build you a functional wine storage area

You don’t always need a big budget to have rich taste. This is especially true when designing a wine storage area in your IKEA kitchen – regardless of its size.

In fact, according to our team of certified design professionals, there are many ways to establish an eye-catching and accessible wine storage area simply by combining the right IKEA cabinets with IKEA’s SEKTION cabinetry framework. This holds true whether you have a large wine collection or if your kitchen seems too small but you still want to keep some bottles on hand for entertaining.

Specifically, you can incorporate a unique IKEA wine rack cabinet, including using IKEA VADHOLMA open storage($69.00)or IKEA TORNVIKEN open cabinetry ($69.00), custom options, and even one of our signature design hacks. Keep in mind, IKD has been recommended by The New York Times as a design resource for customers considering custom doors for their cabinets, so we’re well-versed in how to maximize space — and style —in your design. Basically, if you have any extra room in your remodel project, it may be ideal for some cool wine storage. And, the bubbly won’t burst your budget!

So even if you’ve been researching examples of IKEA wine storage on design Web sites like Pinterest and HOUZZ, you may be surprised at some other wine storage ideas that are available to you.

The bottom line: Every IKEA kitchen should be a great gathering place for friends and family. With that in mind, IKEA customers looking for interesting ways to add unique wine storage options will surely appreciate the following wine storage ideas.

So grab your favorite glass of wine and let’s take a look!

IKEA Wine Storage

Even if space is at a premium in your IKEA kitchen, wine storage is always a viable option.

How can we be so confident? One reason is using IKEA’s TORNVIKEN open cabinets as vertical wine storage. This will maximize your space while also adding a stylistic element to your design. To accomplish this, you’ll want to run the IKEA TORNVIKEN open cabinetry along the space between the wall and your refrigerator. You’ll be able to store dozens of bottles. This is a very practical solution because most customers want their refrigerators off center rather than square center against a wall. And at a width of 9” and a height of 40”, the IKEA TORNVIKEN open cabinetry can fit seamlessly into any design.

Along the same lines, the IKEA 15”x14-3/8”x15” VADHOLMA wine shelf in brown stained ash is another popular choice and comes with a slanted shelf or it can be combined with a drawer unit.Measuring at 9”x14-3/8”x30”, 9”x14-3/8”x40” and 9”x14-3/8”x15”, the large open shelving really typifies a display area for bottles and glasses, and provides plenty of additional storage options for serving dishes, cutlery and other items used for entertaining.

To highlight the possibilities with custom design options, for example, consider (hypothetically speaking) an L-shaped kitchen layout where the wine storage is integrated under IKEA cabinets in the corner and has a clever flip-up door that can be lifted for easy access. Or it can be closed to conceal the wine while complementing the aesthetic of the other IKEA cabinets in the kitchen. The best part is that it’s functional too with the wine stored near the work triangle, which you could use it for additional storage of olive or flavored oils, for example.

Island Storage

For larger IKEA kitchens where you entertain often, what’s better than island storage?

This option adds a lot of style and is also practical as it reduces the need for multiple trips to the cellar or other rooms to retrieve your wine bottles while entertaining or to disrupt your food preparation time.Again, IKEA TORNVIKEN cabinets are a great way to establish storage in your island and an island design can hold up to 20 bottles depending on the space. Overall, IKEA TORNVIKEN is available in off white and gray, has a width of 9” and heights of 15”, 30” and 40”.

An IKEA Wine Rack Hack

As an extra design idea, we’d like to share another wine storage idea for those seemingly tight spaces that you’re not quite sure what to do with. We present the wine rack hack, which creates a custom wine cabinet in your kitchen.

Typically a filler panel will do here, but larger fillers can look tacky. The trick is to turn those empty spots into useful storage spaces that will also leave enough breathing room for cabinet and appliance doors to swing open. Also, consider that the smallest IKEA door size is 12” wide. So any space narrower than that means not having a cabinet with a door.At their smallest, IKEA SEKTION high cabinets are 15” wide and need at least 2” of filler against a wall. So, if you have less than 17” of space, this won’t fit.But a wine rack only needs 6” of width, so it works well! In fact, this wine rack holds up to 12 bottles, the cabinet depth of 15”mitigates heat exposure from the refrigerator motor and it’s ideal for inexpensive bottles of red wine, since red wine is served at room temperature.

Or, you could build this hack yourself. You’d need to cut and build your wine rack out of two refrigerator panels that match your cabinet doors. For example, if your kitchen is using grey IKEA BODBYN cabinet doors, you’d buy BODBYN refrigerator panels. If you’re planning to use custom door fronts, you’ll need to purchase additional panels from your door manufacturer so your wine cabinet matches the cabinets.

Regardless of what kitchen design style you choose, the key is to be able to enjoy your IKEA kitchen to its maximum potential. Wine storage is a great way to accomplish this. It utilizes otherwise forgotten space, provides style and efficiency to your layout — and does it all in an affordable way. So it’s pretty safe to say, there’s always room for wine! Remember, our design team is here to guide you in your product and design selections and we look forward to helping you achieve the wine collection you’ve always wanted.
