Our designers explain how to maximize space and save stress in your IKEA mudroom
As professional kitchen designers, we encounter many different design wishes. No matter the room design theme or size, one request is consistent among all our customers: Design a space that not only looks good, but works well too.
That, to us, means storage, storage and more storage.
And by far, the IKEA designs at the top of the list in this regard are the laundry room and mudroom.
Why’s that?
These are areas that – when done correctly – provide serious organizational opportunities for our customers.
That’s why when you’re looking for inspiration from HOUZZ, Pinterest, or other design Web sites, it’s really important to know exactly what you want from your space.
(Keep in mind that we at IKD are certified designers, so IKEA’s planning service will not focus on your lifestyle the way IKD will.)
Do you have a very active family that will create constant traffic in the space, or are you looking for an area to store seasonal clothes?
These are the types of questions our design team asks when starting your IKEA laundry room and mudroom design.
With that in mind, IKEA SEKTION framework will give you many design options as well, and IKEA accessories and custom door options too, can be the thing that turns your dream space into a stylish and functional reality.
We’d like to share some laundry room and mudroom designs we’ve done for recent IKD customers and share some tips for when you decide to take this step for your own home.
So let’s take a look!

Why Design with IKD?
Make an IKEA Laundry Room Design Wish List
The first thing you need to do is make a list of your design priorities.
IKD customer Kim from Santa Fe, NM, took our advice with her recent IKEA mudroom.
“I had experience installing IKEA cabinets with previous remodel projects we did, but with the mudroom I needed to sit down and determine what I wanted the room to do and what activity I wanted it to support. I considered everything from cleaning to storage, knowing I could always pare it down later. It made the entire design process so much smoother,” she says.
So just like Kim did, think about if you will be folding clothes there, or need storage for your laundry baskets or where you will store the ironing board.
To that end, we also recommend getting input from each member of the family.
After all, this is a hard-working room that will be utilized by everyone.
In other words: Really imagine yourself using the space.
Lastly, consider the limitations of the mudroom, such as the distance of the door to the garage or the door to the outside, or if there will be a separate dedicated laundry room altogether.
Use SEKTION To Organize Your Space
Hacking IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system in the laundry room and mudroom will offer many flexible solutions.
Just ask IKD customer Sharon from Great Neck, NY, who used SEKTION along with IKEA LAXARBY fronts in Wood Effect Black (discontinued) for this dynamic IKEA laundry room/mudroom remodel project.
“My husband is a landscape architect, which means he often comes home covered in mud. Because the laundry room doubles as a mudroom, I needed a bench so my husband can remove his muddy items, stick them in the wash, and the dark LAXARBY doors hide any evidence of dirt” she says.
Use SEKTION with corner base cabinets with IKEA AXSTAD matt white for a traditional look, or use MAXIMERA drawers if you’re looking to also use the space as a linen closet.
Even IKEA’s open cabinet solutions, like VADHOLMA or TUTEMO can be used to store towels, washcloths and detergents.
For more customized style, consider doors such as IKEA GREVSTA or IKEA JUTIS.
Meanwhile, a modern door style, such as IKEA’s VOXTORP dark gray will give you the option of a solid, clean-looking slab door.
Remember, the trick is to keep things out of sight, but within arm’s reach.
Use IKEA Accessories and Custom Doors
Ultimately, what people want from their laundry room and mudroom is an organized space with a custom look.
When IKD customer Pat and his wife Carol, from Chicago, IL, selected their remodel design it had to be one-of-a-kind.
As Pat said to us: “Let’s put the fun in function!”
So the couple used custom doors from Semihandmade, IKEA KARLBY countertop and accessories, and Semihandmade floating shelves to really upgrade the look of the room.
You can also think about complementing your laundry room’s look with IKEA’s ALGOT system wall rail with drying racks; as well as IKEA’s LISABO wall shelf combination, which cleverly holds soaps and other cleaners nearby while keeping them out of reach of the family’s young children.
Other unique choices you can make are using IKEA’s EKET storage combination in white for linen storage; BRANDUR hooks near the entrance; SKOGHALL hooks (for the kid’s jackets); an IKEA DANKA ironing board and several IKEA SKUBB laundry bags with stand, hidden near the washer/dryer.
Hopefully, these IKEA laundry room ideas will help de-clutter your space and demystify the design process.
So if you’re starting out with your IKEA design and ready to get your hands dirty (so to speak), IKD will help you design a functional and beautiful laundry/mudroom.
